As we kick off 2020, everyone in the bridal industry is getting excited for the year ahead. Modern weddings are more about choosing your own personal wedding journey rather than following traditions. From 3-day events, second wedding dresses and eco-friendly weddings, to pets as members of the bridal party and the increase in the American trend for rehearsal dinners, there are a lot of exciting new takes on wedding trends to be seen in 2020.
Alison Jaffa from the luxury bridal subscription box, Blushing Bride Box launched her monthly boxes back in 2017 after she spotted an opportunity to share her love for luxury, pretty, useful wedding ideas. Alison personally handpicks inspiring and essential products to share with brides-to-be each month as they journey from ‘Miss’ to ‘Mrs’. She makes it her mission to stay ahead of forthcoming trends to ensure that each Blushing Bride Box delivers “must-have” items and encourages every bride -to-be to think creatively and use their imagination to make their day their own.
Here, Alison shares her wedding trend predictions for 2020:
The dress is always the most talked about aspect when it comes to planning a wedding. In the past year, we have seen a huge shift in styles and colour of dresses walking down the aisle. 2020 will be no different, we are going to see lots of clean lines, elegant boat necks and sleeves. Simple, elegant fabrics similar to that used by the Duchess of Sussex will feature in soft hues of colour. 2020 is going to be an exciting year for wedding dresses.
Every bride wants their bridesmaids to look just as fabulous (almost) as they do on the big day and 2020 will be no different. Mix-and-match is still hugely popular as it enables brides to choose a dress or colour that suits each individual bridesmaid. When it comes to styles, they are going to be sleeker and feature fresher colours to give 2020 brides more choice. Bridesmaid dresses are going to feature cowl and halter necklines, floor and mid-length hemlines, structured silhouette styles in simple materials, including satin and silk. Pantone’s Colour of the Year 2020 is Classic Blue, making blue a hot colour trend for bridesmaid dresses.
Hair and Makeup
Bridal hair trends are constantly changing and how a bride wears her hair on the big day can depend a lot on the style of dress she is wearing and what accessories she has chosen for her hair. Brides have to consider if they are going to be wearing a veil, and do they want it to stay in for the entire day. 2020 is the year for a more natural look when it comes to hair and makeup. Barely-there makeup, highlighting the bride’s best features will create a less is more look, teamed with soft untouched hairstyles focussing on hair accessories. Accessories are tipped to be bigger and bolder in 2020, with headbands making a comeback, 3D florals bringing freshness, hair vines for the whimsical bride and delicate tiaras and hair pins bringing a touch of regal to the bridal look.
With sustainability at the forefront of our minds, couples are steering towards being more creative with their décor, upping the sophistication and tailoring their look and approach to something that represents ‘them’, as sustainably as possible. Unique lighting is the ideal way for couples to express themselves, such as neon signs, fairy lights, hanging pendants and chandeliers. The great thing about using lighting as a décor focus is that they can all be hired, which means that other than the electricity or candles used, there is little wastage and a minimal effect on the environment.
More and more couples are opting for eco-friendly weddings as they are conscious of the environment. Flowers are one of the items on the day that can play a huge factor when it comes to the effect on the environment because they are usually shipping hundreds of airmiles to supply the demand for certain types or colours. 2020 will see a focus on using local flower suppliers and couples growing their own flowers to use on the big day. The green trend will continue, which will enhance the use of lots of foliage and greenery as it’s versatile, and inexpensive if it is sourced locally.
The food you eat on your wedding day should be the food you love and want to eat. 2020 isn’t going to be about high-end fancy dishes that the majority of your guests will pick at, we are going to see a move towards more relaxed dining experiences with sharing plates, grazing tables and foods from your childhood. Most wedding caterers and venues will also be using locally sourced produce for their menus. We are also going to see a further increase in the rise for street food, but at an elevated level that is more sophisticated and elegant.
2020 is set to see more exciting travel experiences for couples to enjoy for their honeymoons. This will see the popularity of minimoons continue to flourish for those newlyweds wanting a once-in-a-lifetime trip; couples will opt for a few days away to wind down after all of the excitement of the big day before returning to reality, ahead of their bigger honeymoon adventure. Eco-friendly destinations can be on the pricey side, but more couples will choose to stay in sustainable hotels and take part in eco-friendly experiences during their trips. Couples really want to experience their honeymoon, so we will see lots of new and different activities being undertaken, making memories that will last a lifetime.
