A DIY wedding is the perfect way to add a personalised touch to your big day, but there are some things that are best left to the professionals! Here’s what NOT to DIY…
The wedding dress
Even if you’ve made your own dresses before, trying to create your own wedding dress from scratch is a whole other level of stress! This also applies to ‘tweaking’ a shop-bought gown with your own additions or tailoring – there’s nothing worse than realising you’ve messed up an expensive bit of fabric just weeks or days before the big event. Trust us on this one: take it to a professional seamstress, or have it made by an expert.
You may be the hostess with the mostest, but unless your family has professional catering experience (and even then, frankly!), catering is an area we advise you leave well alone. Not only does it cost an absolute fortune to buy and prep ingredients for an entire wedding congregation, but you’ll also need an area that’s big enough to cook the food and store it – all just hours before the ceremony. The stress is just not worth it.
You’ve all heard this one before, but it bears repeating! Although professional wedding photographers may be pricey, a good one is absolutely worth their weight in gold. Even if you’re not a fan of having your photo taking, it’s worth bearing in mind that your wedding photos are one of the few lasting mementos you’ll have from this day, and it’s a beautiful reminder of both the wedding and the people who celebrated with you. Just hoping that you’ll have the photos you want from guests, or enlisting a cousin with a point-and-shoot, isn’t going to cut it.
On a related note, getting a relative to hold a GoPro throughout the ceremony isn’t going to give you the best wedding video in the world. If anything, you’re going to end up with a shaky video at a less-than-ideal angle, and your relative is going to end up with a dead arm. If you’re considering a DIY wedding video, then at least opt for a service like Shoot It Yourself, which provides tripods and professional editing to give you the best wedding video possible at a lower price point.
