Why should the bride have all the fun? Here are our top shopping tips for all the marvellous Mother of the Bride…
If you’re about to start shopping for the perfect Mother of the Bride outfit, these tips will help make it a little easier.
Match with the wedding style
Have a chat with the bride early on about the style and theme of her wedding, so that you can get an idea of colours and how formal your outfit should be. As well as helping you decide on details like length and fabrics, this will also mean you’ll avoid feeling over or under dressed.
Complement the bridesmaids, too
We recommend that mums choose a complementary colour to the bridesmaids, rather than a matching one – you want to look like a part of the bridal party without blending in entirely. Choosing a lighter or darker shade than the bridesmaids is always a clever option – for example, wearing fuchsia if the bridesmaids are in light pink, or teal if the bridesmaids are in Tiffany blue. Whatever you do, avoid white!
Shop for the season
Bear in mind your daughter’s chosen season and venue when shopping for your outfit. If the wedding is in summer or overseas, you may want to swap the jacket for a light pashmina; if it’s a church ceremony or you’re anticipating outdoor photographs in cooler weather, pick something with full-length sleeves or a matching jacket.
Talk to the mother of the groom
Don’t leave the groom’s mother out of the loop! Traditionally the mother of the bride chooses her outfit first, but we think consulting the mother of the groom beforehand can help you both make complementary choices and gives her plenty of time to find something, too. After all, you’re likely to be in photographs together, so it’s good planning to make sure you won’t clash.
