Stormy weather didn’t stop this couple celebrating in style at a beautiful, rustic winery venue. Real bride Claire reveals all…
How did you and Bernard meet?
We worked together and met after being rostered together as paramedics
How did he propose?
On Flamingo beach in Aruba in March 2018
How would you describe your wedding in one or two words?
Fun and stormy!
Tell us about your wedding invitations:
We chose Giant Invitation’s country lace invitation for its rustic feel and to fit with our winery décor. We wanted something to reflect the venue and our overall style.
Tell us about your wedding gown and how you chose it:
I wanted something fun and elegant, the dress I chose was from Anna Campbell’s new line, and I was lucky enough to be the one to make its debut (Lexi Elm)
What sort of style did you envision for your wedding day?
Rustic Winery Style
How did you come to choose the location and venue?
It was the first venue we viewed, we felt it was us from the moment we drove into the carpark
Can you describe what type of ceremony you had and how you were able to personalise it?
Paul, our celebrant, was a bit of a comedian, he gave everyone a humorous account of how we met and our journey prior to the day. He made it fun yet heartfelt and our guests loved him. We had personalised vows and we signed our wedding certificate with a trout pen (yes, a pen that looked like a giant fish) – Bernie won it on one of our first dates. We also signed our house documents with it so decided we would keep it for our wedding.
Describe your wedding cake:
We had five tiers of cheese
- Daffonois French Brie
- Maffra Black Cloth Cheddar
- Irish Cashel Blue
- Brilliant Savarin Triple Cream Brie
What flowers did you use in the bouquet and at the venue?
Natives, King Proteas, Black roses and blueberries as a personal touch
What were your favourite moments from the day?
Taking a moment with my new husband to watch our wedding from a distance. I also loved our first dance as we had choreographed a dance, to reflect our personalities, to the Ramones remake of ‘Baby I love you’
Name your wedding soundtrack:
Bridesmaids entrance – 1000 years
Bride’s entrance – Acoustic version of the One by Kodaline
Signing the register – Learning to Fly by Tom Petty
Exit – You make my dreams by Hall and Oates
Reception entrance – The spencer davis group, Gimme some lovin
Any DIY décor elements?
Fairy lights wrapped around the shared meal raised boards on the tables. Hessian table runners, laser cut wooden place cards. Succulent favours grown by my mother
Any sentimental personal touches?
We had flamingo toppers in our welcome cocktails “the flamingo spritz” made with Gordons pink gin to remember our engagement with the flamingos in Aruba. We also had a “dark and stormy” cocktail, which wasn’t an intended pun even though that’s exactly the weather we had
What was the biggest splurge of the day?
Espresso martinis and the crepe van for dessert
How did you save on costs?
We did our own planning, organising and styling
In hindsight, anything you would have done differently?
Not really, it wasn’t perfect, but it was perfect for us. Some of the things that didn’t go exactly as planned were quite memorable parts of our wedding that made it unique.
Where did you go on honeymoon?
Tbc – we had a lot of international guests so we didn’t leave, we had a friendmoon and definitely a foodmoon. We will head off on our honeymoon next year
Any tips that you can give to future brides?
Don’t worry about the little things, some of my favourite parts are the things that didn’t exactly go to plan. Don’t worry about the weather. We wanted a bright sunny day but the thunderstorms kept everyone together on the dancefloor and the cloud cover gave us the most amazing photos, we couldn’t be happier.
