Wedding cakes have evolved considerably over the years. Gone are the days of fruit cakes or white icing. Nowadays, couples are not only choosing wedding cakes that come in deliciously indulgent flavours however many are choosing cakes that are wide-ranging works of art, from delicately piped colourful flowers, to varied botanicals and multiple extraordinary layers.
Last year saw numerous incredible fresh techniques and twists dominate the wedding cake sector, such as the popular geometrics and woodland inspired designs. And 2019 is likely to be no different with several unusual wedding cake trends set to rise in popularity. Here’s what to keep an eye out for this year.
What’s clear is that couples are becoming much more exploratory when it comes to planning their wedding – and that includes the design of their wedding cake. When couples realize the creative possibility to be diverse with their cake designs and flavours in order to charm their guests, many may select something that’s beautifully bespoke and exclusive to them and their special day.
Monograms & Motifs
2019 will see a rise in the number of couples demanding monograms to be piped onto their cakes. Monograms add an air of magnificence to the design while also adding a subtle and understated personal touch. Bespoke hand painted motifs will continue to be popular among happy couples choosing their cake designs in 2019.
Metallics have been increasing in popularity over the course of 2018 and I think that this popularity will continue into the New Year. However, instead of the popular Rose Gold and Gold that have ruled last year, 2019 will see them step aside to make way for Silver and more muted metallics.
Perfectly smooth iced tiers have been the finish of choice over decades however, couples now are open to including varied textures into their cake design. In 2019, we can anticipate to see a rise in couples opting for a delicious cake with a textured surface rather than choosing the more common smooth layers.
It is all in the detail!
With texture coming to the fore as a big trend for 2019, this will inspire couples to become more focused on the finer details of their cake design. For those who want a textured cake, there are endless prospects as to what they can have as part of the design. Delicately piped royal icing is something I think will motivate couples when it comes to considering the details. Furthermore, the ability and skill of cake designers to layer up these details means that these cakes can actually become a masterpiece that sets them apart from the rest.
It’s evident that there are endless possibilities when it comes to choosing a wedding cake. It’s a fantastic, fun way for couples to get creative and move out of the norm of the more traditional fruit cakes and white icing. Wedding cakes are an opportunity for couples to choose something unique to them while captivating and indulging their guests on their special day.
