Bridesmaids from all over the world, elephants at the proposal… Real bride Briony tells all about her gorgeous wedding in Devon!
How did Bernie propose?
”Bernie is South African and we were visiting friends and family there. He took me for a drive around his friends’ place, on the edge of the Kruger National Park. At sunset we ended up at a watering hole in their grounds – a candle-lit table, rose petals and champagne had been set up. I turned around to see Bernie behind me on one knee! To top it off, we were just finishing our champagne when some elephants came down for a drink with the sun setting in the background.”
What dress did you wear?
“My dress was by Eve of Milady (style 1553). We work winters in San Diego, and when over there I found The White Flower Boutique. The ladies were so warm and friendly with amazing advice. They could tell exactly what would suit me, even when I didn’t think so myself.”
And the accessories?
“I wore a gold and pearl bracelet and earrings from BHLDN. My dad also gave me a gold and diamond ring from my late grandma just before the ceremony… The tears started to roll.”
What did Bernie wear?
“An amazing custom navy suit with a grey waistcoat from Zebel Bespoke Tailor in Exeter, Devon. The tailor Keyan embroidered our initials onto his shirt cuff and our wedding date into the inside of his jacket. The groomsmen wore suits hired from Moss Bros.”
Who were your bridesmaids and where were their dresses from?
“My bridesmaids all wore blush pink dresses. My sister, Lindsay, wore a beaded dress from ASOS; Bernie’s sister, Xerise, wore a strapless South African dress; my friends, Sarah, Holly and Jess wore Monsoon and ASOS; my best friend, Sarah, wore a ribbed dress from New Zealand; and my colleague Renee wore a dress from BHLDN.”
What was your theme?
“The national flower of South Africa, the Protea, featured throughout the décor, bouquets and table centrepieces. We also had postcards (made on Etsy) from photos I had taken from all of the countries we have visited together as our table numbers. We also had lots of rustic gold, copper and lace throughout the décor. In the evening, the barn staff set up the courtyard with rustic fairy lights and candles.”
What was your best buy?
“I found an amazing site – theweddingofmydreams.co.uk – which gave me so much inspiration. They had so many amazing rustic candle holders, vases and decorative pieces that were not only gorgeous, but at a fantastic price and free delivery (if you spend over a certain amount). You can rent too, but I fell in love with it all, so have kept it for our house and party decorations for the future!”
