Bride Rachel tells all about her perfect barn wedding and their incredible dancefloor lanterns
How did Ben propose?
“Ben and I lived in Australia for a couple of years. Before we returned to the UK, Ben picked a beautiful, almost-deserted beach in Queensland to pop the question. He dropped to one knee at sunset! He had the ring made by a jeweller in Melbourne.”
What dress did you wear and where did you buy it?
“Unlike a lot of brides, I wasn’t looking forward to dress shopping! I knew I wanted a tea-length dress – mainly so I could dance with ease. After visiting a few boutiques with no luck, I turned to the high street in desperation. I found my dress in Ted Baker.”
And the accessories?
“My shoes were also from Ted Baker, and surprisingly comfortable! In the evening I changed into some glitzy sandals from Accessorize. I wore earrings (the sterling silver and Swarovski crystal range from Accessorize) and a beautiful pearl bracelet my friend had given me the day before the ceremony.”
What did Ben wear?
“I had zero involvement! Ben wore a three-piece suit from Next. He also splashed out on some extravagant socks from Trotter & Dean in Bury St Edmunds.”
Who were your bridesmaids and where were their dresses from?
“My bridesmaids were three of my oldest school friends – Lisa, Rachael and Lorna. We found their dresses in Coast in Leeds.”
What was your theme?
“Haughley Park Barn offered just the right amount of ‘barn charm’, so it was inevitable that we would opt for a country theme! We injected a bit of our travels in, too – tables were named after streets in Melbourne and we covered one of the
walls in photos from various places around the world that we have visited together over the past ten years.”
What was the highlight of your day?
“When the brilliant band (The Mesh Band) started playing our first dance, we signalled to friends to join us on the dancefloor – and it was filled in seconds. Knowing that everyone was having as much fun as we were really touched us.”
What was your best buy?
“Tricky! We picked really well with Him & Her Photography. Lisa and Neil are a husband-and-wife team and are so talented. They made us feel completely at ease and they were so skilled at spotting photo opportunities. Also, the lanterns we paid to have installed in the main room over the dancefloor were fantastic. Suffolk Marquees put these up for us and they were worth every penny! They looked incredible and we wouldn’t have been able to create the same effect ourselves.”
