Suits you! From hourglass to pear, read out top tips for choosing bridal styles to enhance your beautiful figure, as well as our favourite dresses to match…
More than anything else, it’s the sheer celebratory joyfulness we encounter in all of the bridal designers that we love and cherish: they just want to make women look good. And us ‘women’ come in a glorious array of truly splendid shapes and sizes. We’re awesome. Let’s be honest. We are. Never succumbing to the ‘one size fits all’ philosophy, bridal styles and designers work hard to tailor their dresses to suit our shapes, be it hourglass to athletic, petite to pear (Oh sing out you fellow pears!). Here are our top tips for choosing a style to match your figure, as well as our favourite dresses to match your shape…
Toned and Athletic
If you’re slim with balanced hips and shoulders, then a wedding dress with a nipped-in waist can make the most of your athletic shape, as can scoop or V-neck styles. Avoid columns, which won’t give you any definition.
Apple of my eye
Apple shapes have broad shoulders and mid-sections, with slim hips and legs. A-line gowns with sweetheart, scoop or V-line necks are perfect for you, as are styles with skirt splits to show off those legs. Avoid anything shorter than tea-length!
Hourglass and va-va-voom!
Curvy brides with balanced hips and shoulders will want to show off their waist with a defined fit-and-flare or mermaid silhouette. Be careful not to add too much detail to the bodice of the gown though – this can throw the look off-balance.
A beautiful Pear
Brides with wide hips and a defined waist will want to make the most of their curves, so a fitted A-line or mermaid will work here. Sleeves and shoulder details are your friend, while empire lines and columns should be avoided. We’re besotted with this gorgeous gown from ellisbridals.co.uk.
If you’re 5’3” or under, then a simple yet chic sheath or structured mermaid would be perfect for you, as would a tea-
length (or shorter!) style. Avoid ballgowns or skirts with too much volume – these will swamp you.
