Is it paper or tin this year? Our how-to guide to creatively celebrating wedding anniversary traditions throughout the years…
Whether it’s keeping up with custom or putting your mark on a modern twist, thank goodness sentiment and romance remains ever constant. If how to celebrate anniversary traditions – what to give and when – has you all in a spin, never fear, the good people at Hallmark are here! We team up with those expert wrappers of little love mementos and walk you through the wedding anniversary traditions… (And just a teensy little note for Mr Marsden who obviously reads every word I say: we’re on crystal this year buddy in case you’d forgotten. That’s right, man… CRYSTAL…)
1st Anniversary – Paper
The 1st wedding anniversary is almost definitely one of the most exciting! A whole year since you first became united together. Tradition dictates that the gift of your first year is that of paper…we know, not quite the sapphire you were after! Writing a love letter, however, is a perfect way to show your partner you care (on fancy paper of course!) If you prefer a modern touch, have your first dance sheet music printed and framed – a super sweet idea with a nod to the paper tradition.
5th Anniversary – Wood
The 5th wedding anniversary is known as the Wood Anniversary and comes when you’ve been enjoying your time as a married couple of several years. This anniversary is perfect for food lovers: why not go personal with a personalised chopping board or cheese board?
10thAnniversary – Tin
Happy Tin years! 10 years of marriage is a wonderful achievement and one that should be enjoyed to the full. Tradition suggests that the corresponding flower for 10 years of marriage is that of a daffodil, but if you’d like to take things in a different direction, a tin keepsake is a thoughtful way to keep your shared memories together.
15th Anniversary – Crystal
A classic if ever we had heard one! Crystal’s are known for their healing properties, and what better way to treat yourselves than with a glass of sparkling champagne in your brand new crystal flutes. After all, a few bubbles go a long way to healing the soul!
20th Anniversary – China
This is where things start to get seriously fancy. When we think of China, we think of the Royals sipping from a delicate teacup. Go classic with an all-new teapot for the family home; we don’t know about you, but a hot cup of tea is definitely the key to our hearts!
25th Anniversary – Silver
You’ve reached a quarter of a century together – congratulations! Celebrating your 25th Wedding Anniversary should be all about the fun factor, perhaps with some silver jewellery thrown in for good measure (hint hint grooms). Lots of couples choose to go away on a mini break for their 25th; think romantic destinations such as Venice or Barcelona!
30th Anniversary – Pearl
Pearls symbolise wisdom acquired through experience, and after 30 years of marriage, we think anyone would agree with that! Whilst traditionally you may expect a pearl necklace or earrings set, thinking creatively with this one could end up seriously stylish. Pearl-adorned clothing is a huge fashion trend this season and can be spotted right across the high street, so why not treat yourself or your partner to a pearl (faux of course!) scattered jumper or cardigan. Go cashmere for an extra special and lasting touch.
40th Anniversary – Ruby
Ah rubies, made so fabulously famous by that little lady in Oz. If red sparkly slippers aren’t your thing, stick to a bouquet of classic red roses or ruby-embedded jewellery. For a modern twist, why not go for personalised biscuits; many stores are more than happy to create your own bespoke selection, which could include all things ruby red.
50th Anniversary – Gold
The big one! Celebrating your Golden Wedding Anniversary means only one thing… party time! Having a golden-themed party is the perfect way to bring the family together and celebrate each other in the process. We think a Great Gatsby themed party would be super fun; all the glitz and glamour of the ’20s with Oh-So-Gold adorned everything!
60th Anniversary – Diamond
Another incredibly special day, 60 years of marriage together can warrant only the most precious of gifts: diamonds. Often diamonds are the original stone to seal your impending life together in the form of an engagement ring. We love that this tradition comes full circle and you again get to celebrate with diamonds 60 years later… the bigger the better!
Our thanks to Hallmark (hallmark.co.uk) for these excellent top tips.
