A meeting of two minds with Moomin and Hello Kitty toys as Finland meets Asia in an Oxford setting for this real wedding. Bride Erica tells us more…
How did Aleksi propose?
“Aleski spent the past Christmas in Finland with his family, and before he left he filled a notebook with compliments and loving messages, pictures and memories. He proposed by making me read the notebook with him – the last two pages read, ‘Will you marry me?’”
What dress did you wear?
“I wore ‘Mimosa’ from Viva Bride. It was a lace fit-and-flare style with a V-neck front and a keyhole back. I was very lucky that it only needed a few alterations!”
And the accessories?
“One of my bridesmaids is a gemstone jeweller, so she sourced me stud sapphire earrings for my ‘something blue’. She also made my wedding band. I wore two silver bangles by a Danish designer and a sentimental St. Christopher’s necklace that Mum bought for me. When I realised I had nothing suitable, one of my bridesmaids kindly bought me a silver, sparkly clutch too, from Accessorize!”
What did Aleksi wear?
“Aleksi and the groom’s party wore grey morning suits from Shepherd & Woodward, with light blue ties and pocket squares.”
Who were your bridesmaids and where were their dresses from?
“I had two bridesmaids – one was a school friend and the other a friend from studying at Oxford University. Both of them have supported me through different formative areas of life. Both their dresses were from ASOS, although customised with different accessories to give them their individuality.”
What was your theme?
“There was no real ‘theme’ as such, but we picked white, light blue and gold as our colours. We had lots of Moomin and Hello Kitty stuffed toys round the cake table, to represent both Finland (for Aleksi) and Asia, where my mum’s side of
the family is from.“
What was the highlight of your day?
“The marriage ceremony itself – you can see me crying in some of the wedding photos! Other highlights include our first dance, a traditional Finnish wedding waltz that I had to learn from scratch, and the speeches. I also have fond memories of the funny things people said when they’d had one too many drinks at the bar!”
What’s your saving tip?
“Discuss with your fiancé from day one how much you can each afford to save, whether you’ll do it separately or in a joint account, and what each of your purchasing responsibilities are. Also, don’t be too harsh on yourself! If you see something you love, buy it, especially if it’s on sale!”
