How to get that snap happy look that lasts a lifetime… our guide to the essential shots for a stunning wedding album!
There’s no doubt that there are differing tastes when it comes to wedding photography, as albums have evolved from a catalogue of posed, traditional shots and group line-ups, to more contemporary styles often captured in a documentary style.Photographers take individual approaches on the day and in post-production too – editing and filtering their images for different finishes and offering couples various styles of wedding album, to record key moments from the day.
And while hundreds of photos will be taken during the proceedings, only a select number will make it into that all important physical album with real prints and pages, that will be treasured by you, and your family, for many years to come. It’s therefore important pre-wedding for you and your partner to consider what types of photos you would like taken and then to relay this to your chosen photographer to ensure that you ace your album. So, whether you’re planning on natural, candid photography or something more traditional, we team up with the ever-lovely Rachel Parry and Brides Up North for our list of wedding album must-have shots to help get you started…
Not all photography packages include capturing the bridal and groom prep at their separate locations prior to the wedding but as nerves and excitement circulate, we think there are some truly special moments and emotions to be captured. Perhaps most importantly, the bride getting ready with her maids and mum as well as her dad seeing her in her wedding dress for the first time, but also the groom having a laugh and a drink with his closet male friends and relatives prior to the ceremony. For full fail-safe coverage of this point in the day, some photographers work as part of a duo so one can be with the bride and the other with the groom.
The bride’s arrival
With hair, makeup, attire and flowers all complete, we just love those first shots of a bride arriving at the ceremony venue; whether she and her entourage have travelled by car, foot, helicopter or horse (and carriage!) It’s those final moments she has to herself (and the chosen person that gives her away) before becoming a wife.
The first reveal
Definitely one of our favourite shots in a wedding album has to be the moment the groom lays eyes on his bride for the first time at the end of the aisle. Whether the reaction involves tears or uncontrollable grinning, this is a very precious point at the beginning of the ceremony which many don’t get to see as the couple are facing away from their guests. It’s therefore lovely to be able to see the results in the album instead.
We must say, we highly advise encouraging guests to put their phones and cameras away for this part of the proceedings and just allow the professional photographer to do their thing. Often they will have arrived early to scope out the best areas to get their shots from that won’t interfere or distract from the main focus, leaving the bride and groom to concentrate on those al l important words that will legally bind them as husband and wife. It’s great for the album to feature the tears, giggles and smiles that occur at this moving part of the day.
Once again, we’d advise couples to ban guests from snapping at this time to allow their professional photographer to get a clear shot of them walking the aisle as newlyweds without others getting in the way trying to get their own pics. There’s plenty of time for guests to get their shots throughout the rest of the day.
The confetti throwing
In our opinion a classic shot that will never die! It’s a celebration that you are now legally married and an explosive shot of colourful confetti will make both a fun and vibrant and addition to your album. Guests can also get snapping at this point.
The nearest & dearest
We know group shots can be seen as dated and (understandably) some couples don’t like too much of their day to be taken up by staged shots. That said, we think it’s really important for group shots of the nearest and dearest to be included on the must-have list, especially ones of close family and friends, absolutely including bridesmaid and groomsmen shots with the bride and groom. To ensure they are taken care of swiftly, give your photographer a list of who you would like including on the group shots and task the best man and ushers with rounding the necessary people. Miss them out though and we think you’ll regret it later down the line when you come to look back on your album.
Though we would agree that it’s predominately people pictures that you want to make up your album, we like to see all the little details captured too. From the décor and stationery through to the blooms and cake, all these extras help to build up the full picture of a couple’s day reflect their theme, colour scheme and them as a couple. When so much work has gone into such elements, it’s nice for them to be documented.
We know couples will be itching to spend time with their guests and on the dancefloor, but there’s nothing quite like a stunning portrait shot of the newlyweds to sum up the feelings of the day. Such images could well be the reason that you picked your chosen photographer in the first place having seen breath-taking portraits in their portfolios. Many couples also report this being an ideal opportunity throughout the day to just spend a little time alone as Mr & Mrs as your photographer captures you from a distance.
The first dance
Another classic and another must-have for us. Whether you’ve been having professional lessons to deliver a Strictly-worthy performance or simply plan to wrap your arms around one another and sway side to side teenage-sweetheart style, it’s a poignant moment of the day where emotions will be running high and the perfect image to complete your big day album.
