Hold on to your hats ladies, as Sarah Main shares with us the best destinations in the business…
Year in, year out, their Geordie homeland of Newcastle tops the hen party locations list by a country mile. Blushing Brides-to-Be in their droves flock to the party capital of the UK, for a Geordie Shore style hen weekend. With fabulous activities including club cruises, Ladies Day at the races, Champagne afternoon teas in glass fronted sky bars (we’re looking at you, SIX Baltic) and an unrivalled nightlife scene – it’s no surprise why The Toon’s always on top.
Coming a close second, the fair city of Dublin draws hundreds of hen parties every week, to sample the unique atmosphere of the live music in Temple Bar, the liquid nectar that is Guinness and those cheeky Irish chappies. With fabulous, hen party-friendly bars like Lillie’s Bordello, Bad Bobs, Harry’s on the Green and The Morgan Bar with its famous afternoon tea, you’ll never want to your Dublin hen do to end.
Our lively capital, London, thoroughly earns its place at number three; boasting the very best activities, bars and nightclubs, all to a backdrop of the iconic landmarks we know and love. Filled with whacky and wonderful hen party activities, including a plethora of musicals, baking with an ex-Great British Bake Off legend, a Mini Cooper Italian Job Challenge, and even afternoon tea on a London bus – there’s plenty to keep the girls occupied in The Big Smoke.
Places four, five and six of our top 10 hen party cities are currently held by UK hot spots, Edinburgh, Manchester and Liverpool. The olde-worlde charm of Edinburgh and its dark, mysterious past, enchants visiting hen parties to the city, where the vibrant Manchester and Liverpool exude a modern and thriving aura – just what any hen party needs.
Marbella has climbed rankings in recent years, with its luxurious vibe and beach clubs aplenty, and is currently positioned at number seven, where Nottingham and its wonderful Sherwood Forest based activities casually sit at number eight. Number nine is Cardiff, offering fun Welsh Games, It’s A Knockout and white water rafting, as well as an impressive nightlife scene. This year’s tenth place is held by Leeds, which we expect to climb a few places in the following years; the northern city’s gorgeous cocktail bars, high-end shopping districts and plentiful dance classes make it a hen party haven.
Similar to the hens, Newcastle holds our stag do top spot for yet another year running. The Toon really must be doing something right… Boasting a world famous football team and huge stadium to match, some of the north’s biggest and best outdoor activity centres (including off-road driving, go karting, quad biking and clay pigeon shooting) and, of course, its mint Geordie Shore-style nightlife areas – it’s no coincidence it’s such a sought-after destination. Newcastle’s Zombie Experience is also seriously popular with those more outside-the-box stag dos. Effectively, groups have to play tactical and combat the zombies by problem solving and shooting with unlimited ammo, covering a whopping 15,000 sq feet of battle ground.
Newcastle is closely followed by the land of vice, cheap beer and beautiful Czech women, Prague. Resolutely cool, we see hundreds of stag groups Czech-ing out what the ‘loose’ capital has to offer – including, not surprisingly, lots of bargain booze and strip clubs. Here, you can get strapped into a military fighter jet, sky dive, bungee jump and shoot lethal weaponry (not all at the same time, although that would be cool…).
Budapest is bouncing. So much so, it’s held position three for many years on the trot. The ideal balance between party (ruin bars) and recovery (Szechenyi thermal baths) is the sort of thing stag do dreams are made of. Stags hoping to properly stitch up the Groom-to-Be are in the right place in Budapest, with stag do pranks such as Trabant humiliation, married a stranger stripper and stag arrest up there with the best of them.
You won’t be surprised to hear that the birthplace of Guinness is our fourth most popular stag do destination, with the Guinness Factory Tour and Connoisseur Experience up there with the absolute top things to do once you’re there (apart from getting drunk and wearing green hats and ginger beards, of course). Fifth is Nottingham, where hordes of stags and their merry men traipse into Sherwood Forest to drive, joust and shoot stuff (targets as well as each other), and sixth is the adult playground of Amsterdam, where stag do fantasies become a reality.
Holding seventh place is rowdy Riga, home to the Olympic bobsleigh track, meaty shooting packages and a whole load of stag do tales. Our MD had his stag in Riga, which gives you a rough idea of how epic it is. Bournemouth is eighth, with an up-and-coming party scene and more water-based activities than you can shake a stick at, followed by Liverpool whose live music scene and brand-spanking new Mersey Games are proving a huge pull. Finally, at number 10, tried and trusted Krakow is an exciting, heady mix of cool clubs and bars, with krak continuing into the early hours.
