Whether you’re marrying abroad or there’s a heatwave forecast for your UK wedding, it’s worth knowing these top tips to avoid a literal meltdown on the big day! Here’s how to stay cool at your Summer wedding…
Keep it shady
Shade is your friend when it comes to hot Summer days, so make sure you’re not leaving your guests sat in the scorching sun for too long if you’re having an outdoor ceremony or meal. If your chosen venue doesn’t have much in the way of natural shade, set up a cool-off tent or marquee for guests to retire to if need be.
Make sure there’s plenty of iced water readily available at both the ceremony and the reception to avoid both you and the guests overheating! Ask your catering company whether you can provide jugs of iced water at the tables, or set up a water station somewhere at your venue. Make things a little prettier by swapping plain water for fruit waters, like strawberry and lime or watermelon and mint.
Give your guests paper or handheld fans before the ceremony starts – they make for a pretty favour and they’ll stop people from waving their programme around instead. Better yet, why not print the order of service onto your paper fans to avoid extra printing costs?
Marry by the water
If you know you’re likely to be tying the knot at the hottest time of the year or in a sunny country, then keep this in mind when choosing your venue. Marrying by the sea, a lake or even a pool can help cool your guests down thanks to the breeze coming off the water – plus, you can always take a paddle if the Summer heat gets too much!
Make sure to slather on SPF the morning of the wedding, and keep re-applying whenever you get a moment. If you’re feeling generous, pop a few bottles of sunscreen in each bathroom at your venue for guests who need a top-up or who have forgotten SPF altogether.
Embrace the heat by hiring an ice cream van to serve your guests delicious ice lollies, or swap your dessert for a gelato buffet. You could even ask the bar to provide a couple of signature frozen cocktails to keep the party going whilst still staying cool.
Carry beauty essentials
Ask your bridesmaids to carry some essentials with them to stop you melting in the heat, such as blotting papers or powder, a water spray and extra deodorant. If you’re not already planning on wearing waterproof mascara, then we definitely recommend it, as sweat can do just as much damage to your makeup as tears!
Put your hair up
Consider opting for a simple updo on your wedding day rather than keeping your hair down; it’ll keep the back of your neck cooler and avoids your perfect curls drooping in the heat. Simple will always work better in extreme heat, so avoid anything too elaborate. You can always add a sparkling tiara to keep your look extra bridal!
Don’t forget the boys
Summer weddings can be hell on grooms and their ushers, so bear the weather in mind when picking out suits together. Instead of darker colours, opt for lighter shades of grey or tan, and consider a linen suit rather than heavier wool blends. Consider ditching the waistcoat for a simple two-piece suit, or go for a modern look and leave the jacket off altogether in favour of a waistcoat or braces!
