For a traditional, elegant wedding with sophisticated details, real bride Whitney reveals her ‘how to’…
How did John propose?
“We gave each other an early Christmas present a few weeks before. His gift to me was a silver locket with a note inside that read: ‘One day you can put our kids’ photos in this, but first you have to marry me.’ When I looked up he was down on one knee.”
What dress did you wear?
“I had searched high and low but had only found parts of dresses I liked, never ‘the’ dress. I spent some time searching online, then found my perfect dress. I then located a bridal store nearby that carried it and went to try it on. I wore a Tara Keely wedding gown from All Brides Beautiful in Hudson, Ohio.”
And the accessories?
“I wore pearl stud earrings and a pearl bracelet given to me by my mother. I also wore a cathedral-length veil with Alencon lace appliqué and lace ballet flats. For my ‘something blue’ the bridal couturier embroidered my maiden name monogram and wedding date inside my dress, and I also wore a sapphire and diamond ring given to me by my groom. And, as an added detail to incorporate my husband’s favourite college sports team, I surprised him with a Michigan State University green and white wedding garter.”
What did John wear?
“An Oleg Cassini suit with a white vest and tie, and black Barclay shoes, along with a Bulova watch given to him as a wedding present from me.”
How did you feel when you saw him up the aisle?
“Incredibly excited! Walking arm in arm with my father down the aisle and seeing the smile on John’s face absolutely melted my heart.”
Who were your bridesmaids and what dresses did they wear?
“I had six bridesmaids, including two of my closest childhood friends, Jennie and Caitlin, two of my sorority sisters from college, Sarah and Stacey, and two of my sisters-in-law, Sheila and Mandy. They all wore long navy dresses by Vera Wang.”
What was your theme?
“A nautical-themed golf setting – a combination of my love for everything nautical and my groom’s passion for golf. This theme also represented our relationship as we reconnected at a golf outing long after meeting in college.”
What was the highlight of your day?
“The whole day was a highlight! It was so wonderful to have all our family and friends together from all across the United States and from England. That doesn’t happen too often!”
