After turning a dress disaster into a dream, Harriet recalls her bright and colourful wedding day…
What dress did you wear?
“I made the mistake of Googling Vera Wang dresses to get an idea of the shape and fabric I might like. I fell in love with one that I couldn’t afford, called Gemma (it was £6,000). I searched for something similar but nothing could match it in any of the bridal shops. I eventually found one that I liked, but didn’t love, in David’s Bridal. I ordered it and before it had even arrived I knew I’d done the wrong thing. I made an appointment at the Vera Wang store in London and tried on Gemma, to see if it was definitely what I wanted, which of course it was. I frantically searched and found Gemma for £1,300 from a shop in Ireland. David’s Bridal don’t offer refunds or exchanges so my original dress is hanging unworn in my wardrobe, but I loved Gemma and definitely made the right decision!”
And the accessories?
“Jenny Packham earrings and my shoes were from Jimmy Choo.”
What did Sam wear?
“Sam wore a suit from Reiss, which he had tailored to make it a perfect fit. He wore a navy tie and a liberty print handkerchief.”
How did you feel when you saw him up the aisle?
“I felt nervous when I started walking in and then I remember just feeling excited to see him, and willing him to turn around. I didn’t feel nervous once he had. I thought standing in front of that many people would be nerve-wracking, but seeing all the familiar faces wasn’t scary at all.”
Who were your bridesmaids and what dresses did they wear?
“My bridesmaids were my sister, Sam, my (now) sister-in-law, Hayley, and my best friend Harri. They’re all different and wanted different things, so in the end I saw some mint-coloured chiffon midi dresses in Oasis.”
What was your theme?
“We didn’t have a theme, we just wanted the wedding to feel relaxed and for everyone to have a good time. In terms of colours Haberfield Hall has a very bohemian, eclectic vibe to it and there’s lots of white with splashes of bright colour. We limited the colours to coral, mint, and grey, with bits of fuchsia and some other splashes of colour.”
What was the highlight of your day?
“Looking around in the evening when the band started to play next to the pool, some of the kids got in a for a swim and I thought that everyone looked like they were having a great time. It was exactly the happy, relaxed atmosphere we wanted.”
