Thinking of buying your wedding dress online? Think again! Here, one designer chats about the frustrations and pitfalls of online bridal shopping…
“When we were first approached by the editor to write this blog post, she must have read our minds. As wedding dress designers, the cheap Chinese copies of ours and other designers is a sore point that is on our minds daily.
Designed with love
Everyone thinks we have such a glamorous life; don’t get me wrong, we do travel the world! But what isn’t seen is the hard work, blood, sweat and tears that goes into designing a new collection. To get to a collection of 30 dresses, we have to design around 150 styles, which are then whittled down, tweaked, changed, dropped and picked up again to make sure the wedding dress is perfect for a bride. All this is part of our daily routine when designing a dress and is the hidden part of our industry.
Then come the collection images. These images that you fall in love with take a team of talented, creative people a long time to shoot and develop into the pictures that you see in the magazines, blogs and on Pinterest. From start to finish, this process takes around 18 months, in advance of anything hitting the market!
So, you can imagine our frustration when we are searching the internet and our images start popping up on Ebay. And when brides email us asking why we have quoted a certain price for a dress, when they can get it $80 online.
We recently contacted a counterfeit technology company and we were devastated and appalled to discover that our images are in use, ILLEGALLY, in over 1,800 different places on the internet.
We receive phone calls every day from crying brides, saying they have bought “our Sarah dress” online for $80. The dress doesn’t fit, is the wrong colour, it’s a complete mess and can we fix it? It’s heart-breaking for us to listen to this on a daily basis and have to refuse to help the bride. You may ask, why don’t we just help these girls? Well, if we did, this would disrespect the brides who have indeed bought a Mooshki wedding dress from an authorised retailer.
Do not be tempted to buy your dress online. All you will get is a dress stuffed into a jiffy bag, packaged so tightly that the creases don’t come out. To show you how bad these dresses are, we purchased some from eBay – just like you may have been tempted to. This was an experiment to see what the quality of our imitators was like, and they were even worse than we had anticipated. We ordered them in a standard size, in a colour that we offer. We gave the companies custom measurements taken from our own size chart. It was hilarious and horrifying at the same time. Below you can see our production manager Grace wearing one of these dresses – it’s easy to spot the fake on the left!
We do not sell online. None of our retailers sell online. Why? Because a bride needs a fitting, experienced staff to help her choose the right gown and the right people, in the right place with the right advice to help her choose the perfect dress and make her look amazing!
Working with a tight budget
Obviously, we are aware that not every bride has the same budget to work with. So how do you get the dress of your dreams when you’re on a super strict budget? Don’t buy from a cheap website – all you are doing is giving more money to criminals! Why not try preloved sites instead? Brides who have bought from an authorised retailer sometimes want to sell their gown after their big day. Or, go to your local boutique and be upfront and honest about the budget you have and the look you want to achieve. Every bridal shop and designer has samples on a rail for sale. You may find your perfect gown, you may not – but what is guaranteed is that you will find a genuine designer wedding dress at a bargain price!
We want you to look a million dollars! Not a bag of rags, stressing out over the slightest thing because the budget you had for your dress has been eaten up by a piece of tat, copied from a genuine designer. By buying one of these dresses from what is essentially a conman, all that will happen is that designers will stop releasing images. If there are no images, there are no copies. But then, there will be no choice. Feeding an illegal industry only spoils the whole experience for every other bride out there.”
