Fancy an eco-friendly wedding? Here, Louisa Townsend from Confetti Supermarket, shares her top ideas for planning a green celebration…
“Green weddings are incredibly special; they are not just important for our planet but are packed full of creativity, imagination and plenty of style. We’ve come up with some ideas to help make your eco-friendly wedding unforgettable from start to finish.
Choose an eco-friendly wedding dress
Finding an eco-friendly wedding dress is a perfect way to keep your wedding green while wearing an outfit you really love. If you’re planning a green wedding but would love to buy a new dress, you can look for eco-conscious dress designers who are known for focusing on sustainable production or even have a dress tailor made with organic or vintage fabrics.
If you’re happy to wear a pre-loved wedding dress, there’s never been a better time to enjoy browsing the second-hand wedding market! You can still enjoy the dress selection experience in a second-hand boutique, including a chain of Oxfam bridal departments across the UK. One idea we love brings a beautifully personal touch to your wedding as well as being great for the planet – you could re-use your mother’s or even your grandmother’s wedding dress. If it doesn’t fit or it’s not your ideal style, you can always have it professionally altered.
Green wedding venues
There are some fabulous eco-friendly wedding venues to choose from, including stunning rustic farms or barns that will create a truly romantic ambience for your special day. Or if you’ve fallen in love with a venue but want to add your own green touches, you can use locally made sustainable furniture and decorate the venue with bamboo instead of flowers. Candles or lanterns can transform any venue into a tranquil setting and will reduce energy bills, too.
One of our favourite green wedding venue ideas is to get married outdoors, in a forest, by a lake in the grounds of a stately home or even in a tree cathedral – this will create the most unforgettable day for both you and your guests. More and more venues offer outdoor wedding licences to make your eco-dream a reality. Your venue will already be naturally decorated with trees, berries and flowers and guests can bring blankets or cushions for when it’s time to serve food.
Source local food and drink
If your wedding reception is in a hotel or restaurant, you can check with the venue to see if they source locally produced food and drink. Or if you can provide the food, buying from local farm shops is a wonderful way to source organic, seasonal food that will create a stunning wedding feast on the big day. Many farms offer catering for weddings and can supply evening buffets as well as food for the wedding breakfast.
Use biodegradable confetti
The classic confetti photo moments surrounded by friends and family are a must-have on your special day, but if you’re planning a green wedding you may be worried about the impact traditional confetti could have on the environment. Biodegradable confetti is a perfect confetti alternative to keep you and your guests happy while staying kind to the planet. This eco-friendly confetti is available as both tissue confetti and the water soluble “biofetti” which can be loaded into cannons for a dazzling effect to remember! Biodegradable confetti comes in lots of different colours and dissolves by itself, leaving no lasting trace at all.
Eco-friendly wedding stationery
Going green with your wedding stationery can make a huge difference to our planet. The date and information about the venue, directions and gifts can all be sent online, or you can set up a wedding website. If you would like to send the actual wedding invitations by post, there are plenty of 100% recycled invitations available for you to find your perfect design.
Green-fingered wedding favours
For green wedding favours, you could choose a flower that you both love and give fresh seeds to each guest to plant in their own gardens, or give little plant pots to guests with a spring flower or herbs. Another idea we love is to pay to plant trees or sponsor an area of rainforest instead of buying wedding favours – you can create a 100% recycled postcard to leave on each table with a picture of the trees you have planted.
With a touch of creative thinking, you can plan a unique green wedding that will keep memories of your special day alive and help protect our planet for years to come.
