Amanda Dowell, from Opulence Bridals, reveals how to make the most of your dress shopping experience…
The fashion industry finally realised a little while ago that not every girl is a size 10 and statistics show that the average size of a woman in the UK is now a 16. The bridal industry is catching up very quickly and today there are more and more bridal boutiques catering for a curvier figured woman.
In 2009 Jason Jennings designed the amazing gowns for the Sonsie collection by Veromia and since then there have been more and more designers following suit, such as Maggie Sottero, Benjamin Roberts and Mori Lee to name just a few. Don’t be confused though ladies, as some gowns are just larger sizes of the usual collections, which sometimes won’t give you the support you might need.
Some of the collections are specifically designed for a curvier figure. Brands such as Venus UK, who now have a range called Women, Special Day Ireland have a range called BB+ and Bonny Bridal UK have a range called Unforgettable (this is to name just a few, there are many more). These collections have the extra boning in the top you might need for support and they might be slightly higher at the back for coverage – they’ll have all the things you’ll be looking for as a curvier bride.
So, here are my top tips for all you gorgeous curvy ladies out there:
Do your research
Phone round the shops and see which stock gowns specifically for curvy girls (not just gowns available to order in bigger sizes, sample sizes in a 16+) and I’m not just talking just 1 or 2, ask them exactly how many they have in your size and up.
Have a chat
Speak to whoever answers the phone, she’ll probably ask you a multitude of questions about you and your big day and you’ll know instantly if it’s somewhere you’ll feel comfortable going into.
Try to wear some good fitting underwear as this will give you a better idea of the overall shape of your gown
When it comes to style, try on as many as possible because society may say you can’t wear that mermaid gown with ruffles, but who says they’re right!
It can hide all sorts! For instance, chiffon will just flow over any imperfections you may not like, where as a rouched gown will look so flattering and hides everything.
Want to wear a belt?
Find something that will sit to one side so it draws the eye to a smaller part of your body.
Listen to the lady looking after you. Be open to ideas and trust them to find something that will suit you.
Look out for lace-up backs on gowns – they will make you feel secure and give you an amazing shape.
This is one of the biggest days of your life and it should be a positive memorable experience.
