Do you want to escape the British weather with a big-day abroad? Wedding planner Charlotte Elise shares her expert advice…
Pick the Location
Is there a location that is particularly special for you both? Have you always dreamed about getting married in a certain destination? The first thing you need to do is ask yourself where you would like to get married and then think about the logistics of family and friends. Are there accessible flights for everyone? Is the accommodation nearby a reasonable price? Remember it is your wedding and you can have it wherever YOU want to. If there are many people who can’t make it you could always have a celebration when you return to England. Your location should always mean something to you and say something about your personal style.
Visit the venue
A site visit is absolutely necessary in order to ask all the relevant questions, visit different spots where you’ll be holding your wedding and to speak to local suppliers in the industry. As wedding planners we can take care of this for you if you are unable to visit due to work or family commitments. You would never book a full wedding package in England without seeing anything so don’t do the same if you are getting married abroad.
Inform friends and family as early as possible
Pick your guestlist based on the numbers that can fit in the venue and go from there. Always bear in mind that you might not have as many guests as you would in England but if you give everyone enough time and notice to sort out flights, accommodation and payment, you should hopefully have everyone there that you want.
Research local marriage requirements
This is a really tricky one. Often the legal side of destination weddings puts people off straight away. Many countries have a ‘residency requirement’ and so this can definitely complicate matters. Do your research and know exactly what needs to be done in order to have a legal marriage in a specific country.
