We catch up with real groom, Steve, to find out how he and his beautiful wife, Carmen, created their gorgeous wedding day
What was your wedding date, venue and photographer?
We married in Maunsel House on the 29th May 2015. The house is a magnificent 13th-Century manor located near Taunton and is full of character, history and beauty. Our photographer was Simon Biffen.
How did you propose?
We were on holiday in Vilamoura, Portugal, with close family and friends. That evening we went to Carmen’s favourite Thai restaurant. I got down on one knee, strategically blocked the exit and proposed in front of the restaurant full of people. It was a complete surprise to our party of ten people and the others in the restaurant. Everyone clapped and we celebrated in the traditional way with a few bottles of Champagne.
What dress did Carmen wear?
The dress was called Brandy by Maggie Sottero, purchased from Rookery Manor Bridal Room in Somerset. The girls in were great and really helped Carmen with a difficult decision. It was a low back dress with beautiful detail.
And her accessories?
Carmen wore a hairpiece by Amanda, Swarovski drop earrings, a bracelet borrowed from a friend and peep toe shoes from Jenny Packham, which she adored.
What did you wear?
A dark blue three-piece suit from TM Lewin with a white shirt, blue dotted tie, gold tie pin (which the bride found in an antiques store), a Citizen gold watch, dark tan shoes and belt to match.
Who were the bridesmaids and what dresses did they wear?
The bridesmaids were Carmen’s best friends who she played rugby with and has known for over a decade, Emily and Julie, and their dresses were a lace design dress from Ted Baker.
What was your wedding theme?
We wanted a relaxed feel without a definite colour theme. We mixed and matched summer pastel colours and handmade as much as possible to give our day a personable feel. Over eighteen months, Carmen sourced fabric from charity shops in blues, yellows, pinks, peaches, and handmade over 50 metres of bunting. This pulled together the peach colours of the bridesmaid dresses and the flowers in blue ‘Ball’ Mason jars in the centres of the tables.
What was the highlight of your day?
The whole day was magical but moved so fast. The highlight was being fortunate enough to be able to spend it with our family and friends. To see my bride glow with happiness!
What was your best buy?
Simon Biffen. He was amazing with us prior to the day helping us prepare, during the celebrations he made us feel completely at ease and mixed well with our guests, but most of all the fantastic images we have of our day, which we can treasure forever and show our children in the future. You can’t put a price on that.
What’s your saving tip?
Don’t leave everything to the last minute and have a thrifty wife like mine!
